TURNOCK COURSES
This list varies from
year to year but, since 1997, my major instructional adventure has been the
development and offering of online courses and training programs. This began
with the online version of my primary course
"Public Health Concepts and Practice" (also known as
CHSC 400 within UIC School of Public Health). As of mid-2004, more than 1250
students have taken this completely online course. You
can examine this course (including an introductory video, the course syllabus,
and an example of the course's first module) by visiting the CHSC
400 Course Web Site. One of the more useful
features of the course is an extensive compilation of public health resources (CHSC 400
Course Resources). These
resources include links to more than 50 web sites and a variety of documents, tools and
videos that relate to the course's content.
This course is based on
my book (see below); the first edition appeared in 1997 and was the first public health textbook that
presented public health and public health practice as a system. This approach provides a framework
for continuously learning more about public health and how its various pieces fit together.
The book also fosters the premise that improving public health practice is possible if we
can understand the various components of that system and how changes in the inputs and
processes of that system can affect its outputs and outcomes. This text is now
in its third edition (2004); more information on the book
is provided below.

Based on the lessons
learned in developing and teaching this course, I have begun to utilize this
technology and instructional design to develop and deliver online training courses,
now numbering more than 60 courses, for front-line public health workers and for
mid and
senior level public health professionals. These courses are offered through the Illinois
Public Health Preparedness Center and contribute toward certification by the
Public Health Practitioner Certification
Board. Anyone interested in more information about the content of these
courses should contact me and I will provide access to the inner workings of
these courses.
