Alex
Kurczaba earned his B.A. from Canisius College in 1965, his M.A.
in German Literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo
in 1971, and his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of
Illinois at Urbana in 1978.
He has taught literature, culture, and film at the University of Illinois
at Chicago since 1979. Among his publications are: Gombrowicz and Frisch:
Aspects of the Literary Diary (Bonn: Bouvier, 1979)and Conrad and Poland,
co-author and editor, (Boulder: East European Monographs, 1996). As visiting
faculty member, he has also taught at Loyola University of Chicago, DePaul,
and St. Xavier University of Chicago. He has authored articles, reviews,
and translations dealing with Conrad, Gombrowicz, Milosz, Baczynski, Polish-German
literary relations, and Central European studies in higher education in
The Polish Review, Slavic Review, Germano-Slavica, Canadian Slavonic Papers,
Sarmatian Review, L'Epoque Conradienne, Literatura polska na obczyznie,
Arcana, and Modern Poetry in Translation.
He is on the Board of Editors of The Polish Review (New York) and The
Sarmatian Review (Houston) and is a trustee of the Joseph Conrad Society
of America.
