Charlemae Hill Rollins Scholarship
The Charlemae Hill Rollins Scholarship was established by the Chicago Chapter in 1982. The Scholarship is named in memory of the outstanding African American children's librarian, writer, lecturer, and educator, Charlemae Hill Rollins (1897 - 1979). Mrs. Rollins was children's librarian in the George C. Hall Branch of the Chicago Public Library from January, 1932 to July, 1963, when she retired.
The Scholarship is a cash award of $500.00 made to a worthy African American student to begin a program of library education at the graduate level.
The Scholarship is non-renewable.
The Scholarship recipient must enter a formal program of graduate library education leading to a master's degree at a library school offering a program accredited by the American Library Association.
The Charlemae Hill Rollins Scholarship is funded by the Chicago Chapter Black Caucus of the ALA and individuals.
The Scholarship is administered by the Scholarship Committee of the Chicago Chapter, Black Caucus of the ALA.
ELIGIBILITY
African American Students who have applied for admission to a formal program
of library education leading to a master's degree may apply for the scholoarship. (It is not necessary to have been accepted as a school at the time of application.) The recipient must enter a library school offering an American Library Association accredited program. Two major factors are considered in awarding the Scholarship:
(1) academic excellence; and
(2) student statement (essay)
Applicant must be a legal resident of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. Applicants cannot have completed more than 12 semester hours (or its equivalent) toward a master's degree in library science prior to January 1, 2001.
PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING
Applicants will complete an application form, available from the Chicago Chapter Black Caucus of the ALA. Applicants will request tha complete transcripts of all college and graduate study be sent to Mrs. Sandra B. Mohammad, Chairperson. Applicants will also send three (3) recommendations, on forms provided. An interview may also be required of the applicants.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS
Completed applications, recommendations, and transcripts must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2001. Applications which are not completed by that date cannot be considered. apersons who provide recommendations for applicants should be informed of this deadline. ANNOUNCEMENT OF SCHOLARSHIP WINNER
Formal announcement of the winner will be made at the Annual Membership Meeting in April, 2001. Applicants will be notified regarding their status by March 31, 2001.
PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIP
The $500.00 cash award is paid at the time of registration in library school.
