Freeways, Now

An essay for a symposium in Houston in 2001 began my involvement with the cultural life of freeways.  A fellowship from the Institute for the Humanities is funding the writing;  grants from the UIC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has enabled me to travel and photograph.  The color photographs were made with small high-resolution digital cameras (a Nikon CoolPix 5000 and a Leica Digilux);  the black-and-white pictures were made with the Kodak Master View 8x10 camera.
