A. viscosus is involved in gingivitis and possibly in mild cases of periodontitis.  A. viscosus may set the stage for the development of periodontitis since it is known that it promotes adhesion of the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis to dental plaque.  It also produces succinate, a growth-stimulating factor for Porphyromonas gingivalis.
