·Gram-negative (Gm+ in young cultures)
·Rods with straight, curved, rounded or pointed ends,
arranged in pairs, chains or septate filaments
·Anaerobic to capnophilic
Only
one species, L. buccalis
The Leptotrichia are Gram-negative but cells
may stain Gram-positive in young cultures. This is important if one tries to
interpret Gram-stains of periodontal pocket flora. They are rods with straight, curved,
rounded or pointed ends. Often
they are arranged in pairs, chains or septate
filaments. They are anaerobic to
capnophilic.
Only one species, L. buccalis is known.
