The James J. Stukel Professorship Program “UIC has a responsibility and a unique opportunity to contribute to the well-being of Chicago and other metropolitan areas worldwide.” – James J. Stukel, UIC Chancellor 1995-2005 In honor of James Stukel, the 15th president of the University of Illinois system (1995-2005), GCI is committed to sustaining and carrying on his Great Cities vision through the James J. Stukel Professorship. This program is one of scholarship, seminars, research grant formation and active forums on the future of the 21st century urban university as a contributing anchor of globalization and great cities. The James J. Stukel Professorship represents the important contributions of James Stukel in founding GCI and setting all public research universities on the road to becoming truly engaged research institutions. GCI and the Great Cities Commitment stand as signature elements of UIC and will serve as a lasting contribution of President Stukel to the intellectual and institutional identity of the university. The James J. Stukel Professorship Program This year-long professorship is focused on the role of higher education in the growth, development, and history of cities. Awardees come from all different disciplines and are expected to make a significant intellectual contribution (including publication) to the UIC Great Cities Commitment. This prestigious award is targeted toward senior academics at UIC and outside of UIC who have an international profile in the field of engaged urban research.
