1. An Excellent Faculty.
Public Administration faculty work at the cutting edge of research on the application of theory to the practice of public and nonprofit management. All have earned doctorates; all contribute regularly to scholarly discourse in the field. The full time faculty is augmented by adjunct faculty who allow an expansion of the curriculum into specialized subjects.
2. A Nationally Ranked Program.
The Master of Public Administration Program is one of just three programs in the greater Chicago region that is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, the discipline's dominant professional association and specialized accrediting body.
3. A Dynamic College.
The Public Administration Program is part of UIC's College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA), a leading player in the university's Great Cities Initiative. Through its two academic programs and six research centers, the college helps fulfill the university's commitment to research and to the improvement of the quality of life in Chicago and urban areas worldwide.
4. Opportunites for Interdisciplinary Study.
In addition to the Public Administration Program, CUPPA houses the Urban Planning and Policy (UPP) Program in one of the nation's largest and most respected centers of urban planning education. The UPP Program delivers both the master of urban planning and policy and a PhD program in public policy analysis, with a focus on urban planning and policy issues. Interested public administration students may take courses in the UPP or other related programs or in the university's multiple other programs and colleges.
5. Opportunities for Hands-On Experience.
In addition to its academic programs, CUPPA is also home to the Great Cities Institute, the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, the Nathalie P. Voorhes Center for Neighborhood and Community Development, the Survey Research Laboratory, the UIC Center for Urban Economic Development, and the Urban Transportation Center. These centers and institutes provide an abundance of research assistantships and other opportunities for public administration students to gain valuable experience and financial support.
6. A Great University.
UIC is the largest institution of higher education in the Chicago region, one of 88 Carnegie Research I institutions in the United States, and a significant center for education, research, and public service. Because of its vast resource base, UIC offers its faculty and students the very best in computing technology, research facilities, and a wealth of entertainment and cultural activities.
7. An Educational "Best Buy."
UIC is listed as a "best buy" in Barron's Best Buys in College Education. According to the college guide, not only is UIC an academic powerhouse but its diverse student body enjoys a green and friendly campus. Barron's description of the university, which is based on student surveys, lists campus safety, dedication of the student body, and aacdemic rigor as other positives. Tuition and fees are highly competitive with other colleges and universities in the area.
8. Financial Aid Opportunities.
Through its academic programs, research centers and institutes, and affiliated campus units, CUPPA is able to support a large percent of its full-time students. Both assistantships and fellowships carry a full waiver of tuition and most fees and, depending on position, pay upwards of $1,000 per month.
9. Meaningful Career Placement Assistance.
Public Administration students receive continual assistance as they search for compensated internships, land their all-important first professional jobs, and become mature public managers and administrators. Recent PA graduates have been recruited by the federal service, state and local agencies, nonprofit organizations, private consulting firms, trade associations, and other organizations engaged in public service activities.
