Using the UIC LDAP White Pages

     
 
     
Introduction
 

LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is an Internet protocol that email programs use to look up contact information from a server. LDAP directories are important to people who use Outlook for email; Outlook only supports search LDAP. They are neat to use with Mac OS Mail.app, where they work seamlessly. If you are already using Ph, you don't have to switch to LDAP.

Note that we are currently limiting the number of results per query to 100 in order to discourage spammers trolling for email addresses. We may adjust this limit if it proves to be problematic.

This service has been tested to date with Eudora 6 Windows and Mac, Mac Mail.app, Outlook XP/2002, Outlook 2000, Outlook Express 6, and Thunderbird, Penelope Eudora Version 8.0beta1, and Evolution 2. The important information you'll need to set it up to work with most email programs is:

LDAP Server (Host) Name: ldap.uic.edu
Search Base: ou=people,dc=uic,dc=edu
Port: 389
Login: No login or authentication needed or Login Anonymously
Do not use Secure connection or Encryption
Maximum number of results to return: 100

Some clients also ask for:
Search scope: Subtree or One level
Search filter: (objectclass=*)

If you can get it to work with a client not mentioned here, we would appreciate you sending us detailed configuration and usage instructions at systems@uic.edu.

If you run into any problems (including waiting more than 5 seconds for results on a high-speed link) please send a report to systems@uic.edu.

Please include at least:

  • Detailed description of failure including complete text of any error messages
  • Name and version of your email client
  • Details of the clicks and typing you used to configure the client
  • IP address (DNS name) of the machine you were running the test from
  • Date and time of a the failed lookup attempt
  • Your query / name of person(s) you were trying to look up
