Using WebDisks - Firefox web browser
To manage files through a web interface on the Macintosh, we recommend using the Mozilla Firefox web browser. To learn more about and download Firefox, visit http://www.mozilla.org/. To learn the process of managing files through the WebDisk web interface, visit our WebDisks Web Browser support page. More experienced users may want to scroll down to read about using WebDAV technology to access the files on their webdisks in a more direct, efficient method.
Setting up WebDisks - Mac
and Goliath
WebDisks uses WebDAV technology for file sharing.
Since SSL WebDAV (ie a secure connection) is not supported in Macintosh OS X version 10.3.1 and earlier, we recommend use of Goliath to support SSL with WebDAV to connect to WebDisks. The
Mac OS 9x version of Goliath 1.0.1 requires a PowerPC based Macintosh
running Mac OS 8.1 or higher. Goliath 1.0.1 for Mac OS X requires
10.0.4 or greater.
These instructions pertain to installing and using
Goliath 1.0.1 for Mac OS X. The Mac OS 9x version of Goliath 1.0.1
is similar and these instructions can be used for it as well.
Installing Goliath
Both versions of Goliath 1.0.1 can be obtained
from the WebDAV Resources website.
- Download the Mac OS X version:
Start your web browser.
Go to http://www.webdav.org/goliath/#download
Click on the link labeled "here" in the Mac OS X section.
Hold down the Option key and click the here link
Save the "Goliath1_0_1.dmg.gz" file to your desktop.
Double-click the "Goliath1_0_1.dmg.gz" file to uncompress
it.
A file named "Goliath1_0_1.dmg" and a disk image named
"Goliath 1.0.1" should then appear on your desktop (if
the files do not uncompress automatically, you need to install StuffIt
Expander.)
- Install Goliath for Mac OS X:
Double-click the disk image "Goliath 1.0.1"
Drag the "Goliath 1.0.1" folder to the Applications folder
located under your hard disk icon.
Goliath is now installed on your Macintosh.
- Connect to WebDisk
Open the Applications folder.
Locate the Goliath 1.0.1 folder and open it.
Double-click the Goliath 1.0.1 application icon.
The "New WebDAV Connection" dialog box should then appear.
- To connect to your WebDisk:
In the "New WebDAV Connection" dialog box,
type:
http://blackboard.uic.edu/bbcswebdav/users/your_uic_netid
be sure to replace "your_uic_netid" with
your actual netid.
In the login dialog boxes type in your UIC netid ACCC
common password.
Click OK.
When you connect successfully to your WebDisk, a
window will appear on your desktop.
Security Certificates
The first time you connect, you may get a Security Alert asking
you to install a Security Certificate.
To install the Security Certificate:
Check the Install Certificate box to enable it.
Click OK.
After installing the certificate, Goliath should then connect successfully.
The certificate should only need to be installed once and will not
appear again in subsequent connections to WebDisk.
When you have connected successfully, you can
begin using your WebDisk space.
