System Requirements for NAV Version 10
|
| |
Mac OS X
- Macintosh OS X version 10.3 or later
- For Mac OS X 10.4.10, 10.4.11 and Mac OS 10.5, see Symantec AntiVirus 10.2, which is fully Leopard-compatible.
If you also run Mac Classic, you have to install a Mac Classic version of NAV for it. You can get NAV for Mac at no charge. See How to determine if your Symantec Macintosh product is compatible with your Macintosh computer. If you are using Mac OS 10.4.10, 10.4.11, or 10.5, you should use Symantec AntiVirus 10.2.
Also, if you run Virtual PC, SoftWindows, or SoftPC, which emulate the Windows
environment on a Mac, you need to run Windows antivirus software in your virtual
Windows OS. NAV for the Mac won't protect it. That's not a problem for anyone
at UIC, because you can get NAV/SAV for Windows at
no charge.

Download Norton AntiVirus Version 10 for Macintosh
|
| |
Norton AntiVirus 10 for Mac OS 10 can be downloaded individually ("purchased")
from the University of Illinois Webstore.
You will have to login to the Webstore via Bluestem using your UIC netid
(be sure to include @uic.edu) and ACCC password. Norton Antivirus continues
to be available to the entire UIC community, faculty, staff, and registered
students, at no charge. You can download it directly from the Webstore.
After you log in to the Webstore, click on the FACULTY/STAFF or
STUDENTS tab. Click the down arrow
beside Search by product titles, and search for Norton.
You will have to go through the whole "purchase" process,
even though Norton Antivirus is free. If you're experienced at buying online,
you shouldn't have too much trouble. If not, you might want to see the Webstores
how-to documentation; it walks you though the whole process.
If at the end, instead of downloading the Norton install file, it's opened in your browser as a bunch of gibberish, click the Back button, then Option- or Command-Click on the Install Now button (it varies with different browsers), and select the menu item that translates to download this file.

Installing Norton AntiVirus Version 10.0
|
| |
Installing Over Other AntiVirus Software:
- If you are using Norton AntiVirus version 9, you don't have to uninstall your previous version of NAV before you upgrade. NAV CE 10 can be installed over NAV 9. If you do, all your Preferences, Scheduled LiveUpdates, and Scheduled Scans will be transferred, so NAV 10 will be fully configured when you are done installing it. (You should check its Preferences, because there are new options you can select.)
- If you are using an version of NAV older than 9 or any other antivirus software, uninstall it before you install NAV CE 10. For help with uninstalling one of these products, read the document How to uninstall a 2003-2004 Symantec Macintosh product.
Installing NAV CE 10.0
- Your browser may have uncompressed the file you downloaded and made a folder with the file name navm_10.0_corp.dmg in your default download location. If not, go the folder where you downloaded the file to and double-click on the file that you downloaded to expand into navm_10.0_corp.dmg at the same location.
*NOTE* If your screen comes up with garbage, make sure you have Stuffit Expander installed. You will need the Stuffit expander utility to uncompress the files. If you do not have it, you can download it from Aladdin Systems, Inc. These instructions are written under the assumption that you are using a Macintosh to download these files.
- Double-click on navm_10.0_corp.dmg, which opens the Norton AntiVirus 10.0 Corporate CD.

- Double-click the Norton AntiVirus Installer icon. This opens the NAV 10 installer. Click Continue.
- The next screen has the Read Me file. It's a good idea to print it and read it; it has a lot of useful information about NAC CE 10. Click Continue.
- On the Software Licence Agreement, read the License Agreement and click Continue. A popup window opens asking you to agree to the terms of the license agreement to continue the installation. Click Agree or Disagree.

- Select a Destination on the next screen. Click on your Macintosh HD and click Continue.

- On the Installation Type screen,
- Click Upgrade if you are installing over NAV version 9.
- Click Install if you are doing a fresh install. A popup box will open warning that all applications will need to be closed and your Mac restarted at the end of the installation; click Continue Installation.

- NAV CE 10 will begin installing.

- When the installation is complete,
- Click Finish on the Finish Up screen if you are installing over NAV 9.
- Click Log Out on the Finish Up screen if you are installing fresh.
- Restart your Mac:
- When the installer asks you to, if you are installing over NAV 9.
- Or the installer will restart your Mac automatically if you are installing fresh.

After Your Mac Restarts
|
| |
- When your Mac finishes restarting, open NAV: Applications -> Norton AntiVirus.
- When NAV opens, it will tell you that virus definitions are out-of-date. Click Update Now.

- LiveUpdate opens. You want to update everything, including the program, so click Update Everything Now.
- A box opens showing the progress of the download.
- When the LiveUpdate download is complete, the LiveUpdate Summary screen is displayed.
- Click OK. The LiveUpdate main screen will now display the date you last ran LiveUpdate and the date of the last update.

Scheduling LiveUpdate and Regular NAV Scans
|
| |
Note: if you installed NAV 10 over NAV 9 and had LiveUpdate and NAV scans scheduled in NAV 9, they will be carried over. You should look at them to make sure they are still what you want however. In this case, you click on the scheduled event's name and click Edit.
- Open NAV: Applications -> Norton AntiVirus.

Use LiveUpdate to run LiveUpdate and Schedule to schedule regular updates. Schedule also lists all scheduled tasks. |
 |
- In the Norton AntiVirus main screen, click Schedule.
- Scheduling a Daily LiveUpdate: (If you're updating from NAV 9 and you had a scheduled LiveUpdate in NAV 9, it will be moved to NAV 10. But check it out anyway.)
- Click the Schedule button.
- Click New....
- Click Product Update.
- Select All Products from the dropdown list; LiveUpdate will update the program and search engine as well as the virus definitions.
- The default to check for updates is Monthly; that isn't enough. Weekly is probably enough for Macs, but if you want to be a good network citizen, do it Daily. So select Daily from the dropdown list.
- Choose a time when your computer will be on and attached to the Internet, and preferably, when it won't interfere with your work. I leave my computer running all the time, so I chose 5 in the morning.
- Click Save.

- By default, NAV Virus Auto-Protect is turned on, to protect files as you read and write them,
including attachments in Eudora and Outlook.
- Running a Manual Scan: NAV will automatically scan a CD or .dmg file when you open it. If you'd like to run NAV manually, start Norton AntiVirus
by double-clicking the Norton AntiVirus icon. In the main window, select
a disk, folder, or file to scan from the lists, and click Scan/Repair (figure 2 ). Or drag and drop a file or
folder that you want to scan onto NAV.
Or use the Norton AntiVirus item in the Finder contextual menus.

 |
- Scheduling a Regular Weekly Scan: (If you're updating from NAV 9 and you had a weekly scan scheduled in NAV 9, it will be moved to NAV 10. But check it out anyway.)
- Click the Schedule button.
- Click New....
- Click AntiVirus Scan.
- Enter an appropriate name for the scan.
- Click on your Macintosh HD icon on your desktop and drag and drop it into the Select an item to scan box.
- If you run the scan at a time that your computer is on and logged in and on the Internet, but you aren't there, you can move Set a Priority to High.
- Set a Frequency, Weekly is fine.
- Select a time and day. Over the weekend is a good time if your computer is running then, because Symantec usually releases updates to the virus definitions on Friday afternoon.
- Click Save.

NAV CE 10 Preferences and Auto-Protect
|
| |
The default preferences for NAV CE 10 are probably just what you want, but you should check them out anyway.
- Click on the Preferences tool in the NAV main window.
- Click on the closed lock at the bottom left and enter an administrator's name and password to allow you to make changes if necessary.
Auto-Protect, the NAV feature that scans files when they are created, copied, or modified, is turned on by default. To turn it off or to define ranges of files that should or should not be scan, use the Auto-Protect Preferences.
- Norton AntiVirus -> Preferences -> Auto-Protect tab -> Open Auto-Protect Preferences button.
- Click on the closed lock at the bottom left and enter an administrator's name and password to allow you to make changes if necessary.
- These options allow you to turn Auto-Protect on and off in general, for specific files, for compressed files, and for specific types of disks.

Uninstalling NAV CE 10
|

You can find the Symantec Uninstaller app in your Symantec Solutions folder. Use it to uninstall:
- Symantec Antivirus Corporate
- Norton AntiVirus, and
- Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect.

What's New in NAV CE 10
|
| |
- The most important new thing is support for Mac OS 10.4, Tiger. No other NAV product works on Tiger.
- While we're on the subject of Mac OS, 10.4, Global Threat Assessment Widget for Mac OS 10.4 Dashboard, which lists new Symantec Alerts. Use it to see the newest viruses that are out there and provides the status of the virus protection of your computer. It refreshes itself every 5 minutes.
- The Mount Scan preferences: Norton AntiVirus -> Preferences -> Auto-Protect tab -> Open Auto-Protect Preferences button -> Mount Scan tab
Click on the closed lock at the bottom left and enter an administrator's name and password to allow you to make changes if necessary.
This option allows you to instruct NAV which kinds of disks you want Auto-Protect to scan, so it doesn't try to scan, for example, audio disks.
- Custom SafeZones preferences: Norton AntiVirus -> Preferences -> Auto-Protect tab -> Open Auto-Protect Preferences button -> SafeZone tab
Click on the closed lock at the bottom left and enter an administrator's name and password to allow you to make changes if necessary.
This option allows you to specify where on your Mac you want Auto-Protect to search for viruses or not to search for viruses. If you had exceptions defined in NAV9, they will be carried on to NAV 10. By default, NAV is allowed to search your entire Mac.
- NAV CE 10 adds a Norton AntiVirus item to Finder contextual menus so you can scan a selected file or group of files:

- NAV CE 10 now comes with the Symantec Uninstaller app, which you can find in your Symantec Solutions folder.
- NAV CE 10 remembers previously scanned CDs and DVDs and doesn't scan them again.
- It doesn't make you restart your Mac when a new scan engine is installed during a LiveUpdate session. (Yea!)
