Printing on ACCC Unix

Question 1.1 How do I print a file on my account?

  • There are several commands that will print a file on icarus/tigger: lpr, prtty, and qprt. lpr is the most commonly used.
  • Most commands require the name of the printer to be included. To get a list of the printers and whether or not they are accepting print jobs enter the command: lpstat -a
  • lpr on icarus/tigger; enter:
    lpr -Pprintername filename,
replacing printername with the name of the printer you want the printout to go to -- your best bet is to use uprint -- and replacing filename with the name of the file to be printed.
  • prtty on icarus/tigger; enter:
    prtty filename
replacing filename with the name of the file to be printed.
  • qprt on icarus/tigger; enter:
    qprt -Pprintername filename,
replacing printername with the name of the printer you want the printout to go to and replacing filename with the name of the file to be printed.
  • For further information on printing in Unix, see Using Unix: Printing.

Question 1.2 How do I print a postscript file from my icarus/tigger account?

  • Use the command lpr -Pprintername filename.ps, replacing printername with the name of the printer you want the printout to go to and filename.ps with the name of the Postscript file.
  • For further information on printing in Unix, see Using Unix: Printing.

Question 1.3 The job I just printed doesn't seem to be coming off the printer. How come?

  • You've probably selected a U-Print printer as your printer destination.
  • To print a U-Print job, you have to login to the U-Print station beside the printer you're using (which doesn't necessarily have to be the same one you chose when you submitted the job for printing) and tell U-Print to print the job.
  • For more information, see the U-Print Web Page: U-Print: The New ACCC Public Printing System.

Question 1.4 Printing email -- how do I print an entire email - not just the screen?

  • In pine, the press Y to print an email message.

Question 1.5 Pine will not print my email.

  • Pine should print directly to the attached printer when using the Y command. If not, try these steps to set up a printer from your account:
    1. Go to pine
    2. Press S for setup
    3. Press P for printer
    4. Move the cursor to "Personally selected print command"
    5. Press A to Add Printer
    6. Enter printer name (e.g. uprint)
    7. Enter command for printer (lpr -Puprint)
    8. Press E to exit
    9. Press Y to confirm the changes you made
