Sources of Information on American Architectural History

• Spiro Kostof, America by design New York : Oxford University Press, 1987. This is a very interesting, quite personal approach, thematic, like the Upton book.

• David P. Handlin, American Architecture London : Thames and Hudson, c1985. This is a fairly short survey, like the Roth volume chronologically arranged.

• Marcus Whiffen and Frederick Koeper American architecture, 1607-1976 Whiffen, Marcus. Another largely chronological survey like the Roth volume.

• William H. Pierson Jr. and William Jordy, American buildings and their architects New York : Oxford University Press, 1986- ,c1970-

• Volumes 1-2,4-5 have appeared, the first two by Pierson, the latter two by Jordy. This is perhaps the most comprehensive survey of American architecture. The Pierson volumes are standard surveys. The Jordy volumes are really essays.

• Dell Upton, Architecture in the United States A thematic treatment of the subject

• Leland Roth, A concise history of American architecture A standard textbook survey in chronological order

• Alan Gowans, Styles and types of North American architecture : social function and cultural Expression New York, N.Y. : Icon Editions, 1992. A recent and often quite interesting survey of architecture with a good deal on decorative arts.

• Vincent Scully, American Architecture and Urbanism, New York: Praeger Publishers, 1969 A survey
