CCSW Minority Women Concerns Subcommittee General Planning Meeting Thursday, 9/27/07 Five general members RSVPed after receiving email notification of the meeting. However, non of them attended the meet. It was speculated that the rain kept people away. Only two CCSW-MWC members were present, the co-chairs. The meeting began at 12:10 (to allow for late comers) and was concluded by 1:00 pm. The meeting took place in the Student Services Building, room 3050 conference room. We began the meeting with a discussion of when to have future meeting. After a brief discussion we decided to have meetings on the first Wednesday of each month. Occasionally this will be altered but in generally we will try to stay with the first Wednesdays. Meetings will take place from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm so that members can attend during their lunch break. Meetings will take place in the Student Services Building, room 3050 conference room. All members attending the meeting are welcome to bring their lunch. There is a microwave available for members who wish to bring their lunch. * The tentative meeting dates are 10/10/07, 11/7/07, 12/5/07, 1/9/08, 2/6/08, 3/5/08, 5/7/08, 6/4/08 The next item of discussion was providing financial assistance for women to attend the 2008 Women’s Leadership Symposium. Last year we provided assistance to 10 women, the year prior we provided assistance to 9 women. This year we would like to continue to increase our level of assistance. * This years goal is to provide financial assistance to 11 women so that they may attend the Women’s Leadership Symposium which is expected to take place in June 2008 * The timeline is as follows o April 16th have the application on our website and begin advertising o May 23rd application deadline o May 30th let all applicants know whether they will be sponsored or not o Early June the Women’s Leadership Symposium will take place The next item of business was brainstorming and discussing other workshops and events for the 2007-2008 year. We started by talking about March since it is Women’s history month. We would like to have a large event. We discussed the possibility of have co-sponsors so that we can have a good turn out from across campus. We plan to email possible co-sponsors to discuss ideas for what to do. We want to get the event together by January so that we can make sure it gets into the advertising for Women’s History Month that is coordinated by the Office of Women’s Affairs (OWA). We also discussed the need to talk with OWA to make sure we do not plan events that occur at conflicting times. Next we discussed workshops and events for the remainder of the 2007-2008 year. We are still interested in having a Communication Skills Workshop during one of our regular lunch time meeting. This idea grew out of a session that Carmen attended at the 2007 Women’s Leadership Symposium. We also discussed the possibility of having a Self Defense Techniques Workshop, given some of the recent events in the surrounding community we think this would be a useful workshop. Another idea that was discussed is a Hip Hop Dance Exercise session. We would probably do this on a Thursday or Friday after work. Finally we discussed having a networking/cultural/holiday event. Several ideas were discussed and what emerged as the best idea is the idea of a Cultural Potluck. At the Cultural Potluck participants would bring a dish to share with everyone and also recipes cards for that dish so that anyone who enjoyed the dish could take the recipe card and replicate the dish. Below is a tentative scheduled of workshops and events for the remainder of the 2007-2008 year. * October 2007 – General meeting only * November 2007 - Communication Skills Workshop * December 2007 – Cultural Potluck * January 2008 – General meeting only * February 2008- Self Defense Techniques Workshop * March 2008 – Joint Program for Women’s History Month * April 2008 - General meeting only * May 2008 - Hip Hop Dance Exercise session * June 2008 – Women’s Leadership Symposium * July/August 2008 – Summer Hiatus * September 2008 – 2008-2009 planning meeting Action Items * Carmen will o follow up with the police department or city of Chicago regarding whether they have someone who does self defense workshops for the community. o check with the person she knows who teaches a hip hop dance exercise class regarding the possibility of doing a session for our group. * Kathyy will o contact get meeting notes sent to members on our email list and posted on our website o contact possible co-sponsors regarding a March event o ask email participant their interest level in the cultural potluck * The next meeting will take place on November 7th in SSB, room 3050 from noon until 1pm.
