| The University
library provides support for the numerous academic programs and areas of research at
the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). The library
system holds over 1,600,000 books and 17,600 current serial titles, providing access to
scholarly publications in a wide range of subjects. The documents section contains more
than 1,500,000 publications from many different levels of government. The library supports
access to the local on-line catalog of holdings and an array of state-wide, national, and
other on-line systems. The library offers electronic access to databases on the mainframe
through such systems as: ILLINET On-line (IO)enables searching the holdings of over 800 Illinois libraries and checking the circulation status of holdings at more than 40 participating libraries. These materials can be borrowed through circulation services. Illinois Bibliographic Information Service (IBIS)a collection of on-line databases used for identifying journal literature. Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN)an on-line database containing records held by the Research Libraries Group member libraries and subscribing libraries in the United States and Canada. The library also has a number of databases available on CD-ROM. These include CINAHL, InfoTrac, Marcive, and the United States Census Census. The Academic Data Network (ADN-II) Computer Center provides the entire UIC community with ready access to both personal and mainframe computers. An IBM 3090/300J mainframe computer with vector facility offers a full range of analytical and reference services such as numerically intensive computing and large database applications. The ADN-II connects terminals, personal computers, local area networks, and distributed printers with each other and with the Computer Center's IBM mainframe and other computer systems at both the Chicago and Urbana-Champaign campuses of the University of Illinois. The ADN-II network also provides links to the Internet. The electronic mail system on various workstations and the University of Illinois at Chicago Virtual Machine (UICVM), which also can generate outbound facsimile materials, allows the electronic exchange of information across campus and around the world. The ADN-II Computer Center maintains formal ties with the Cornell National Supercomputing Facility and with the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Microcomputer terminals,
laboratories, and printing facilities are available throughout campus. Currently, there
are over 200 personal computers with nearby Xerox PostScript-capable laser printers in the
ADN Computer Center's public microcomputer labs and terminal rooms on the UIC campus. The
UIC ADN Computer Center's UICVM mainframe VM/CMS system has many available compilers,
packages, libraries, and other utilities. |
