4. Fiber Optic Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) SensorA polarimetric WIM fiber optic sensor for measuring truck weights, axle loads, axle configuration, and truck count per lane and has been developed. This is an intrinsic sensor through employment of high birefringent polarization maintaining fibers as sensing elements, in which the weight is encoded through the polarization coupling between two orthogonally polarized eigenmodes of polarization maintaining fiber. The development of new technology based on the use of fibre-optic sensors, will improve, complement and eventually replace the ones currently in use.
