Back to the coop with the hoodoo hen in the wail of the stung south siders. She is low brewed and dotty, and doesn't know her lines. After Mr. Comiskey had imported her from the west side, at severe expense, the hoodoo hen laid goose eggs for the wrong party. So much for the perversity of the female species in general.

Mr. M. Brown and his pals, pulling together on the first soft boiled day in four, bankrupted the Sox with two bits and a 1 to 0 score. Hence the disesteem showered upon the hoodoo lien. Altrock had faith in the fowl, who wore the same kind of socks he did. But she threw him down, and poor Nick left the yard with his usually sunny smile banging down like a torn pocket.

"Big Smoke" Balled Home by Evers.

There wasn't much in the way of stem realities. In the seventh, Chance singled. Steinfeldt and Tinker bunted the big smoke to third and the fair haired Evers poled a single that scored the run. That was about all for the Cubs. They reached the pride of Cincy for a total of seven hits. Nick found the enemy in form. They played the game despite his splendid pitching, and it was the bunt that toppled his hopes.

When Jones reported at his place of business soon after noon he carried three bats and a dozen balls in a hand bag. Fielder made the fatal mistake of disbursing these assets. Had Brown pitched the hand bag with its contents intact and allowed the Sox to swing three bats in a bunch things might have been different. But Mordecai was there with the merchandise, which is code for the goods, and there was nothing doing. […]
