CALA /KS MO ANNUAL MEETING
Oct. 20, 2001
Chinese American Librarian Association / KS MO friends had a pleasant
annual meet at beautiful Johnson County Library in Overland Park, KS on
October 20, 2001 Saturday. We had three topics discussed and shared
working experience at the last.
During the delicious buffet Chinese lunch at Chien dynasty Restaurant, we
continued to talk about working experience. We had a joyful and rewarding
gathering.
Three topics we discussed:
- Mentor program.
We are lucky to have Vickie Fu Doll with us. She was drafter of this
program. She informed us the history of this program and the purpose of
this program, as well as the present progress. It was very encouraging
for us to be a mentor or to find a mentor, or do both. It is as the
program said "the mentoring program will help you meet more seasoned CALA
professionals and help your library career start on the right track". As
librarian, or someone, choose library as a career, would you help someone
with your past cumulated experience? Or you need someone, who has more
experience to help you and to inspire you to advance your career. Let us
help each other.
- Cultural diversity.
We are lacking of Chinese popular collections in the area county and city
libraries to meet the Chinese population needs. We should think and start
to plan, to make this idea come true. We shared the opinion and sorted
through, what we should do right now.
- Chinese romanization change to pinyin system.
It affects many aspects of library work, which has Chinese
collection. Even after
The conversion is done; there will be many update work to be
completed for some
Record, which needs to be check manually. It may take a long
period of time.
- Career experience sharing.
Shirley Ting shared her experience of managing V.A. Hospital Library. Mon
Yin Lung talked about the Law library experience. We get some insight of
these special libraries.
