1. President's Message by Marian T. Chou ................................ 61
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seasons Greetings to CALA Midwest Chapter Members!

It has been an honor and a real challenge since I assumed the presidency
of CALA Midwest Chapter. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to work
with all of you, a wonderful professional group. With many members' hard
work and support, I am happy to report that our chapter has accomplished
some of our goals before the approach of the year end.

Communication is indeed important in our current life style, and has
impacted greatly on our daily works. Thanks to Feng Shan, the Midwest
Distribution List has been serving us in disseminating news, forwarding
messages, serving as a discussion forum on certain sensitive issues.
Please allow me to remind you the address of our chapter's Distribution
List is: cala-midwest@iusb.edu. Please feel free to use it when you want
to send important timely messages to all members.

I am very proud of our chapter's home page, established in July by Lisa
Zhao, our webmaster. There are lots of good comments from members on how
beautiful it is. News Events, a new feature has been added since late
September, increasing the home page's role for services as it shares the
newest happenings among members and important issues. The monthly web
statistics is an indication that this home page has caught the attention
of not only our own members but also the public. The web page address is:

Vickie Fu Doll, VP and Special Task Force Committee Chair, Fung-ying Kuo
Simpson, Vice Chair, and committee members have been busy collecting or
editing data for the online version of Mid-America Chinese American
Resource Guide. You can access the resource guide via URL address:

Ying Liang, Program Committee Chair and members have been busy in
organizing our chapter's annual conference. Conference theme is:
Diversity and Communication: Challenges and Opportunities. Conference
will be held on May 8, 1999 in Chicago. Ling-li Chang is currently
reserving the conference site at Loyola University's downtown campus. We
are proud to have Prof. Ling Hwey Jeng, SLIS, University of
Kentucky-Lexington, as conference keynote speaker. Prof. Anthony Wei of
Chinese history and religions of Governor State University will be the
second speaker. Please mark your calendars and let's meet in Chicago!

Our chapter's board meeting was held on September 12, 1998, in
Indianapolis, IN. A Culture Event, Book Multimedia Exhibits/Author
Lecture program was proposed at the board meeting. A Culture Event
Committee has been assembled, and members include: Dr. Tze-chung Li, Anna
McElroy, Karen T. Wei and myself. This event will be held concurrently
with our chapter's annual conference, so members from out of Illinois can
make one trip to Chicago to attend both annual conference and the event.
This cultural event will be open to the public. Exhibit participants will
include publishers of books and multimedia electronic products in Chinese
cultural topics, such as CJK collections, Chinese fine arts, folk arts,
festival celebration activities, educational games, zodiac and astrology,
acupuncture and herbal medicine, philosophy and religions, linguistics and
the evolution of Chinese characters, calligraphy, literature, poetry,
dance and music. Author lecture program will present Chinese American
authors of non-fiction, fiction and/or Chinese folktales. Authors will
autograph their books and will discuss their works with the audiences.
Again, please show your support by MARKING YOUR CALENDAR to meet in
Chicago!

3. CALA Midwest Public Relations Committee Report ....................... 35
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Public Relations Committee is charged with the task of promoting our
programs and other activities. Committee members are Guo-qing Li and
Peter Wang (Chair). We plan to do the following for 1998/99:

1. News media contact
We usually rely on Chinese language newspapers to publicize our
programs and activities. There are several such newspapers in
the Chicago area, they normally are published daily. Important
news items, written in clear Chinese, can be faxed to Peter Wang
at 630-719-7950 for publication. However, it is up to the
newspapers to decide whether to publish our news items or not.

2. Fundraising
In the past we conducted fundraising among our members, but the
response was less than enthusiastic. This year we are trying to
tap outside sources for financial help. The Internal Revenue
Service granted CALA the 501(c)(3) tax exempt status last year,
so any donation made to us is tax deductible, thus making us more
attractive to potential donors. If anyone has a lead, please
refer it to this Committee, and we will follow it up.

3. Culture event
The proposed book-multimedia exhibit/author lecture program is to
be combined with our annual conference. Currently it is in the
planning stage and a special committee is being formed. This
program will need the concerted efforts of many of our talented
    members.
