Prerequisites and Placement in the Curriculum:

Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkships in Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics; Year 3 or 4.
   

Purpose:

 

 

Student clerks spend two weeks on the Neurology Consultation Service or the Inpatient Neurology Service at the WSVA Hospital, the University of Illinois Hospital or Christ Hospital. Students will be assigned to one resident and one faculty member. They will attend the outpatient clinics of the assigned residents and faculty members up to two clinics per week.

In the process of completing this course students acquire the following competencies:

! Perform a neurologic history and examination so that common neurological diseases may be recognized.

! Learn the principles of neurological localization in the nervous system.

! Know the cardinal manifestations of neurological disease including their differential diagnosis: disorders of mentation, pain, dizziness, headache, movement disorders, loss of consciousness, spells, disorder vision.

!Know the major categories of neurological disease and common neurological entities. ! Be familiar with major modes of neurological therapy. ! Be familiar with the major neurological emergencies and their treatment.

   
   

Instructional
Features:

 

 

The clerkship has a two week structure with an orientation at the beginning, and a final exam at the end of the clerkship. Students will watch instructional videotape as well as be provided with the learning objectives on CD-ROM. The students also have the opportunity to do routine neurologic procedures such as lumbar punctures and observe laboratory diagnostics such as electromyography.

Each student is evaluated in writing by their supervising attendings and residents in the outpatient clinic as well as the inpatient or consultation services. A brief written examination will be administered at the end of the rotation. Grades will be a composite of the performance on clinical service and the written examination.
