Prerequisites and Placement in the Curriculum:
Students must have completed their M3 Core Clerkships in Medicine and Surgery; Year Four

Purpose:

The Diagnostic Radiology clerkship introduces the student to how imaging studies are used in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of patients. The clerkship shows students how Radiographs, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, and Intraventional imaging procedures are done and what patients undergo during radiologic examinations. For each major diagnostic imaging modality, students are taught the basics of image interpretation, the important indications and contraindications, and the relative diagnostic strengths and weaknesses compared to alternative examinations. Students learn to use the radiologist as a consultant in selecting the most appropriate and cost-effective examinations.

Competencies:

Regarding the major categories of radiologic imaging, radiographs, barium studies, sonography, CT, MRI, nuclear scans, and angiography. Students at the end of the rotation should be able to:

! Describe the modalities available for imaging each major organ system.
! Explain to patients what is involved when a person undergoes each kind of radiologic examination.
! Describe the important indications and contraindications for each kind of radiologic examination, including radiation exposure and related biological side-effects.
! Regarding standard chest and abdominal radiographs specifically, students at the end of the rotation should be able to:
! Detect significant abnormal findings present, interpret these findings in the context of clinical data, and formulate a reasonable list of differential diagnostic possibilities.
