College advising policy, philosophy, and/or statement:
The College of Architecture and the Arts seeks to promote the academic success of its students by providing support through its Office of Student Affairs, which oversees the general advising and student related functions of its units. The Office of Student Affairs is the primary point of contact for general student related issues, though its units provide much of the major-specific advising.

Is advising required in the college?
Students in the College of Architecture and the Arts are required to meet with a college advisor for a final credit evaluation two semesters before the intended term of graduation. In addition, students who seek exceptions to university and course distribution requirements must file a petition in the Office of Student Affairs.

Students on academic probation are required to meet with a college advisor and will be notified by mail to schedule an appointment before the start of Advance Registration.

In general, college advisors are available to meet with students on a walk-in basis and by appointment, when necessary.

Does your college have school/departmental-level advising?
For the purpose of course selection and monitoring of degree completion, students in the College of Architecture and the Arts are required to meet with their unit academic advisor each term before the start of Advance Registration. The process for departmental advising differs by unit and is outlined below.

School of Architecture
3100 AAB
(312) 996-3335
arch@uic.edu
http://www.arch.uic.edu

The undergraduate advisor in the School of Architecture is Maria Tolbert . Undergraduate students are directed to contact Ms. Tolbert by e-mail, but also given the opportunity to call or leave a written message in her office to request an appointment. Walk in times are available on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 - 3:30 p.m. (10:30 - 11:30 is available every other Tuesday). It is recommended that students begin planning their schedule before the registration period. During the fall semester, each studio is visited to provide tips on registration and graduation. Directions to preview the Schedule of Classes and an update on degree completion for third and fourth year students are given at that time.

Advisors:
Emily Anderson
eeander@uic.edu

Erin Brady
ebrady@uic.edu

Students in the School of Art and Design are advised by Emily Anderson and Erin Brady, in consultation with faculty in all areas of art and design. The procedure for structured advising sessions offered on set days throughout the semester is outlined below. In addition, students may schedule an appointment by contacting the advisor via e-mail. Students are expected to attend structured advising days prior to the start of registration and should consider this a very important responsibility.

First-Year Students:
First-year students are advised during the week preceding the start of Advance Registration. A schedule of advising dates is distributed to students in the first-year studios.

Advising for Majors in Art and Design:
Advising dates for art and design majors are selected early in the term and distributed to students by email, postings, and faculty announcements. Majors will attend group advising sessions with faculty from their respective areas of study, who will be assisted by Emily Anderson and Erin Brady.

Department of Art History
Professor Robert Munman, Director of Undergraduate Studies
302 HH
(312) 996-5325
munman@uic.edu

Students in art history are assigned a faculty advisor by the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Munman. Students are assigned to faculty by alphabetical order. Students should contact their faculty advisor by phone or e-mail to schedule an advising appointment. Continuing students should seek the answers to advising questions from their assigned faculty advisors; questions that the latter cannot answer will be handled by the director of undergraduate studies on the request of these faculty members. New students, or potential major applicants, may contact the director of undergraduate studies directly by email to set up advising; the earlier this is done before the commencement of the semester the better. Phone messages for this purpose, while acceptable, are not recommended.

For walk-in or open advising, the director of undergraduate studies has regular posted office hours and, if not otherwise engaged with students in his courses, is available for major advising.

Department of Performing Arts
Necolia Cade
L017 EPASW East
(312) 996-2977
ncade@uic.edu

Students in the Department of Performing Arts are assigned to faculty advisors by areas of study. Advising assignments are posted and sign-up sheets are available on the department bulletin board or advisors' doors. Students are asked to schedule an advising session well in advance of their registration date and should have some idea of course selection before the advising session.

When does the college advisor first have contact with an advisee?
College and unit advisors first have contact with an advisee during orientation, at which time students are given an overview of the college and the services provided by the Office of Student Affairs. Students then meet with their unit advisors to review degree requirements, select courses, and familiarize themselves with the advising process and the portfolio process for admission to a major, as well as other relevant information.
