College advising policy, philosophy, or statement:
Advising is available to any Honors College student.
Is advising required in the college? If so, for whom, when, and/or how often is advising required?
First-year students are required to meet with an Honors College staff advisor each semester of the first year. At the end of the first year each student is assigned to an Honors College fellow, a faculty member in the student's area of interest. They are then required to meet with him or her every semester until graduation.
Does your college have school/departmental-level advising?
The fellows program functions at the departmental level of advising.
Describe how advisors are assigned to students:
First-year students are not assigned to specific advisors. Fellow assignment is done by major or by educational goal.
Procedure for scheduling advising appointments:
Appointments can be scheduled by calling (312)413-2260 or at the reception desk.
Describe any walk-in or open advising for students:
Walk-in advising is not encouraged but is available in "emergency" situations.
Additional information or advice for students:
We communicate with our students via the college listserv to give them reminders about making advising appointments.
Typically, when does the college advisor first have contact with an advisee?
It could occur at a recruitment event such as a preview day but most frequently occurs at orientation.
