Udall Scholarship

In 2012, the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation expects to award 80 scholarships of up to $5000 and 50 honorable mentions of $350 to sophomore and junior level college students committed to careers related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care.

Scholarships are offered in any of three categories:

  • To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, economics, and other related fields; or
  • To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal sovereignty, tribal governance, tribal law, Native American education, Native American justice, natural resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, Native American economic development, and other areas affecting Native American communities; or
  • To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care, including health care administration, social work, medicine, dentistry, counseling, and research into health conditions affecting Native American communities, and other related fields.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program announces its 2012 sessions and call for applications.

This Graduate Fellowship Program of the National Academies-consisting of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council-is designed to engage its Fellows in the analytical process that informs U.S. science and technology policy. Fellows develop basic skills essential to working or participating in science policy at the federal, state, or local levels.

Eligibility
Graduate and professional school students and those who have completed graduate studies (degree awarded) within the last five years are eligible to apply. Areas of study may include any social/behavioral science, medical/health discipline, physical or biological science, any field of engineering, law/business/public administration, or any relevant interdisciplinary field. The program takes place in Washington, D.C. and is open to all U.S. and non-U.S. citizens who meet the criteria. Non-U.S. citizens who are not U.S. legal permanent residents must be currently enrolled in a U.S.
university and have proof of holding valid J-1 or F-1 status or work authorization.

2012 Session Dates
Winter/Spring: January 23 through April 13, 2012
Fall: August 27 through November 16, 2012

Graduate and Undergraduate student employment opportunity for a NSF sponsored Project

Graduate student will be needed to join the Chicago Urban Pollination research project starting in summer 2012. For the first two years, the student will be supported partially on a research assistantship and partially on a teaching assistantship. The student will have the ability to influence the future direction of this research and help develop proposals for additional funding.

Applicants should be available to start in June or July of 2012 and have the following qualifications:
•a  B.S. degree completed by spring 2012. A master's degree is preferred but not necessary. Previous course work in ecology and some undergraduate (or graduate) research experience is mandatory.
•a strong interest in urban ecology
•comfort working in heavily populated neighborhoods and interacting with neighborhood residents
•previous experience is preferred, but not required, in the following areas:
-working with bees and other insects
-plant identification
-digital photography (ideally of insects or plants)
-using GIS and statistical analysis
-greenhouse work
-driving or biking around a large city

There also will be one or more opportunities for undergraduate students in spring, summer, and fall 2012. These opportunities will include paid positions or the option to enroll for BioS 399 (independent research) credit. Program Details:
Our fall internships start September 12th and end December 9th, spring internships start January 30th and end May 4th. Part time and full time positions available. We are flexible with your schedule and can help you receive class credit. All internships are unpaid. Unfortunately Greenpeace cannot provide travel or housing.
 
Requirements:
Applicants must be over 18, but do not have to be current students. We’re looking for people with excellent verbal and written communications skills, strong online research skills, the ability to work well independently, commitment to non-violence as a means of affecting change and enthusiasm for protecting the environment.
