Conflict management always begins with disclosure and sometimes involves a combination of management techniques. Conflict management is situation specific; the goal is to achieve the simplest effective means of managing the conflict.

The annual reporting of non-university activities (RNUA) plays an important role in managing potential conflicts of interest or commitment. RNUA is a discrete process, occurring each Fall, during which all academic staff in the university community disclose external activities (or the absence thereof). Working with a conflict management plan, on the other hand, is an ongoing and individualized process. It begins whenever the possibility for a potential conflict of interest or commitment is noticed.

The Unit Head holds primary responsibility for working with the academic staff member to manage conflicts. On this page, you will find information to help you manage conflicts, from a presentation of a variety of conflict-management techniques to a template you can use to create a formal conflict management plan.
