OVCR Advisory CouncilsDear UIC Research Community: At the beginning of my UIC tenure early in February 2010, I began a series of meetings with deans, department chairs, and center directors across campus to help identify UIC “research areas of excellence.” Through these meetings and discussions emerged three broad, theme-based areas of research strength at UIC:
In the fall of 2010, I then established OVCR Advisory Councils on these topics with each council’s membership drawn from faculty from across the entire University. Each council was instructed to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats related to UIC’s research presence within their respective domain, identify areas that could be strengthened and brought to national prominence, and produce a blueprint with detailed recommendations for moving such areas forward. The Advisory Councils have completed their initial deliberations and have outlined their findings in a series of “white paper” documents that are now being made available for review. In response to the completion of these white papers, and with the feedback of each Council, my office is pleased to announce the release of the Vice Chancellor for Research Areas of Excellence Award program. This is a competitive, Request for Proposal (RFP) program that is designed to provide targeted financial support to proposals that are poised to capitalize upon UIC’s unique strengths and opportunities and thereby achieve national distinction. In making this announcement, I would like to offer my personal thanks to the members of each Advisory Council and to the co-chairs who so ably guided their deliberations. Their efforts were made in great service to the institution and their work product will be of tremendous value to the future direction of research on our campus. I encourage everyone to review the Council summary statements and detailed white paper documents. In addition, I am thrilled to be launching the VCR Areas of Excellence Award program and eagerly anticipate the funding of the first series of awards this fall. Please visit the program website for detailed guidelines and instructions for submitting a proposal. Joe GN “Skip” Garcia, MD |
