STEM Grant Recipients
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is pleased to announce the recipients of the STEM Education grants. This demonstration program was funded in part by a gift from the Caterpillar Foundation. Two grants will be made to support pilot projects in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education with the goal of stimulating extramurally funded research. Both projects include undergraduate mentoring components.
Funded Projects
Title: "Pricing and Inventory decision-making for consignment contracts"
PI: Elodie Goodman, Assistant Professor, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
Summary: This project uses mathematical forms of game theory to identify how best to organize contracts for use in consignment-driven businesses. Using a mentoring tree comprised of herself, a female graduate student, and a female undergraduate student, the PI has developed a clear pipeline for developing talent in mathematical reasoning.
Title: "Brain neurochemical changes in autism spectrum disorder"
PI: Michael Ragozzino, Associate Professor of Psychology and Biological Sciences
Summary: Funding for materials to support up to four undergraduates for two semesters’ work to contribute to developing an animal model to study autism and fragile X syndrome, specifically behavioral inflexibility and its relation to serotonin release. Close mentorship structures are detailed for the undergraduates’ mode of work.
