Finding Funding

Internal Seed Funding

Limited Competitions

Some funding competitions limit the number of proposals they accept from any one institution. In these instances, UIC must conduct an internal competition to determine which proposals are forwarded to the agency.

Online Search Tools

  • Community of Science - Search thousands of expertise profiles. Don’t let the “Science” fool you. The COS has over 400,000 federal and non-federal funding opportunities for every discipline. It provides access to research-oriented databases including the Funding Opportunities Database, Commerce Business Daily, and The Federal Register.
  • Foundation Center RFP - A comprehensive, up-to-date database of requests for proposals from foundations and corporate giving programs.
  • Grants Resource Center - More than 1800 government and private funding programs exclusively designed for public colleges and universities subscribing to GRC. Note: first-time users need to email the RDS Program Coordinator to request username and password in order to access this resource.
  • Grants.Gov - All discretionary grants offered by the 26 federal grant-making agencies can be found on Grants.gov.
  • GrantsNet - An extensive database on fellowships, grants and various sources of research support in the biomedical sciences. Also offers links to sponsors' web sites, online applications, and comments from recent application reviewers.
  • Illinois Researcher Information Service (IRIS) - Compiled by the University of Illinois, contains over 7,000 up-to-date descriptions of federal and nonfederal opportunities in every field from agriculture to zoology.
  • National Communication Association - NCA's Current Request for Proposals Tracker identifies funding opportunities for communication scholars including research grants, residential fellowships, travel funds, and awards. There are opportunities for graduate students, post-docs, faculty, and people outside of the academy.
  • STAR Expertise Database - Directory of research interests of UIC faculty based upon keywords found in the NIH CRISP data base. Keywords linked to all UIC researchers listed as P.I. on grants in the CRISP data base.

Corporate and Foundation Relations

The mission of the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (OCFR) is to generate private financial support from corporations and foundations for priorities at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

A key unit within the Office of the Associate Chancellor for Development, OCFR works collaboratively with colleges and other units at UIC, and with sister institutions in the University of Illinois, to facilitate the creation and maintenance of mutually beneficial corporate and foundation partnerships.

OCFR serves the university by:

  • Identifying potential matches between UIC initiatives and funding organizations
  • Providing prospective applicants with research assistance, strategic guidance, and proposal coordination
  • Serving as the central point of contact for foundations and corporations that accept a single institutional proposal
  • Serving as the internal coordination point for integrated UIC proposals
  • Working in partnership with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research to expand the field of potential funding sources
  • Taking full advantage of the resources and services of the University of Illinois Foundation

The Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) office helps in matching UIC projects and programs with companies and foundations that seek partners in order to realize their research, education, employee recruitment and social responsibility objectives. Projects of interest to corporations or foundations may include international programs, healthcare access, K-12 education, online learning, sustainable energy, entrepreneurship, community development and many others. Please review the following top foundations /corporations to see if your program or project is a match with their giving guidelines. If it is a match, please complete this form and submit it to the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations Office.

If you are interested in a foundation not in the top foundations/corporations list above, please contact OVCR’s Office of Research Development Services (RDS) at RDS@uic.edu.
