Guide to RDS ServicesResearch Development Services (RDS) is a division of OVCR. Our mission is to facilitate faculty research across UIC from the concept stage through submission of proposals. Contact us for any of the following services: Funding searchesUIC subscribes to several research databases including the Community of Science (COS). We can run searches for you or show you how to set up a free COS account so you can receive weekly alerts matching your research interests. Proposal developmentAlthough RDS will not write your proposal, we can help you make sure it is complete, well written, and thoroughly addresses sponsor guidelines. We'll help you interpret sponsor announcements, requirements, and forms so you know exactly what they expect and how they want it presented. RDS can also discuss your research goals and help formulate a budget to meet them. We can also review and provide editorial comments on your narrative, budget, and any other component of your proposal. Our goal is to help you assess your draft proposal from the perspective of a potential reviewer. Guidance with UIC internal policies and proceduresIf you're new to research or to UIC, the business of putting together a research proposal can seem complicated. Sometimes you may not be sure of your responsibilities or how you can fulfill them. RDS is part of the larger OVCR team, which includes the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects, the Office of Research Services, and the Office of Technology Management. These offices are responsible for many things that can impact your research proposal including federal compliance issues, UIC administrative requirements, and your intellectual property rights. We'll try to call your attention to these as we work with you and encourage you to ask us questions - we'll be pleased to help you find the answers you need. WorkshopsRDS offers workshops throughout the year to faculty in a variety of areas related to grant writing, budget development, and navigating the UIC research system. We also offer more specialized workshops on topics like the Campus Research Board and Community of Science. These workshops are available to the campus at the college or departmental level. Most workshops are regularly scheduled as well as available upon request. More on RDS workshops... Limited competitionsMany sponsors have funding competitions that allow only a limited number of nominations or proposal submissions from a single institution. For these competitions, it is essential to conduct an internal selection process. RDS is responsible for the oversight of these competitions. More on limited competitions... Campus Research Board (CRB)The CRB provides seed money to UIC faculty members for research projects in the basic life sciences, clinical sciences, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences. Projects are funded for one year and should produce results that lead to extramural funding applications. Competitions are typically in the spring and fall. Individual investigator awards are set at $15,000. The CRB is administered by RDS. More on the CRB... |
