2007 Career Awards at the Scientific Interface

Program Description:

These grants are intended to foster the early career development of researchers with backgrounds in the physical/computational sciences whose work addresses biological questions and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. Candidates are expected to draw from their training in a scientific field other than biology to propose innovative approaches to answer important questions in the biological sciences.

Awards:

$500,000 over five years to support up to two years of advanced postdoctoral training and the first three-years of a faculty appointment.

Eligibility:

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in one of the fields of:

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemistry(physical, theoretical, or computational)
  • Computer science
  • Statistics
  • Engineering

Exceptions will be made only if the applicant can demonstrate significant expertise in one of these areas, as evidenced by publications or advanced course work.

Nomination Process

Candidates must be nominated by the dean or department chair where they plan to take their postdoctoral training under the award.

UIC may nominate up to two candidates. If OVCR receives more than two* nominations, an internal selection process will be conducted.

* If at least one of the candidates is African American, Hispanic, or Native American, then UIC can nominate up to three candidates.

Notice of Intent to Apply:

Please use the accompanying form.
In section VII of the UIC – NOI form, please indicate if the nominee is African American, Hispanic or Native American.

This notice of intent must be signed by appropriate dean or department head.

Please submit with original signatures to Mr. Tony Halford, Office of the Vice Chancellor For Research, 1737 West Polk Street, MC 672 by Monday, March 6, 2006.
