Program Summary
This program provides $700,000 over five years for physician-scientists to bridge advanced postdoctoral/fellowship training and the early years of faculty service. Proposals must be in the area of basic biomedical, disease oriented, or translational research.
General Eligibility requirements
- Must have an M.D., D.D.S, D.V.M., or equivalent clinical degrees. Pharm.D. or Pharm.D, Ph.D degrees are not eligible.
- Must be a clinical fellow, resident, or a postdoctoral researcher and have at least two years of research experience at time of application.
- Candidates who hold a junior faculty appointment (Lecturer, Instructor, Assistant Professor-non-tenure track, etc) may be eligible. If your position is a mentored one and you have at least 24 months of postdoctoral research experience, and have been in a faculty position for two years or less at the time of application you may be eligible. To meet this requirement, your junior faculty appointment (non-tenure) must have begun no earlier than July 1, 2009. .
- Candidates with tenure-track appointments as an Instructor of Assistant Professor at the time of application are not eligible.
- Must not be more than 10 years past their most recent doctorate.
- Proposals in health services research or involving large-scale clinical trials are ineligible.
- Applications also encouraged from those who work in reproductive science.
- Must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada at the time of application.
- Recipients required to devote at least 75 percent of their time to research related activities.

UIC can nominate up to 5 candidates. If a woman or underrepresented minority is nominated within the initial five candidates, a sixth candidate may be nominated provided that candidate is a woman or underrepresented minority (i.e. African American, Hispanic, or Native American).

Letter of Intent
OVCR may reserve submission slots for previously submitted but unfunded proposals that received highly competitive ratings from the external sponsor. These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Vice Chancellor. For consideration, scanned copies of your complete reviews (not just summary) must be included with LOI.
Depending upon the number of LOIs submitted, OVCR might be required to facilitate an internal peer review process to select UIC’s submission(s) to this program. White paper instructions will be posted if necessary.
