Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation New Faculty Awards Program

Principal Investigator selected: Dr. Ying Liu - Chemical Engineering.

Program Summary

This program supports the scholarly activity of new faculty in Ph.D.-granting departments in the chemical sciences, including biochemistry, materials chemistry, and chemical engineering.  Awards are used to help initiate their independent research programs.  Recommendations for awards are based on evidence that the nominee has the potential to produce an independent body of scientific scholarship of outstanding quality and will make significant contributions to education in the chemical sciences

Awards

$50,000 over five years for unrestricted research.  Award is generally approved before the new faculty members formally begin their first tenure-track appointments.  No indirects.  Award can not be used to defray salary.

Eligibility

Faculty members must start their first tenure-track appointment in 2008 to be eligible for nomination in 2008.

Limit

One per institution.

Limited Competition Instructions

  1. Submit one electronic copy of a White Paper containing the following:
    1. One (1) Page cover page with following information:
    2. Name & departmental affiliation of PI and Co-PIs
    3. Sponsor and sponsor program name 
    4. Title of White Paper
    5. PI Contact Information
    6. Unit Business Manager or Grant Coordinator contact information
  2. Three (3) page narrative providing highlights of the nominee’s achievements and an overview of the nominee’s independent research plan and a statement on teaching. 
    1. Page limit include any charts, figures, tables, etc
    2. Narrative minimum 12-point font; minimum margin is ½ inch all around.  
    3. An additional 4th page may be used exclusively for references
  3. CV (limited to four pages) that includes relevant publications and any special recognition.
  4. Optional: 
    1. Identify potential individuals to review proposal - reviewers should not have a personal stake in outcome of this competition.
    2. Identify reviewers to exclude - this information will remain confidential.  
    3. Note if this is a resubmission.  If so, attach any peer review comments received from either external sponsor or a prior UIC internal competition.
