HHS - Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERTs) Scientific Forum (U19)
RFA-HS-11-003

Program Summary

The CERTs Scientific Forum (CS Forum) has as its primary goal the achievement of synergistic and impactful research and educational collaborations of the CERTs Research Centers (RCs) with each other and with stakeholders and partners in the larger therapeutics research and education community. The CERTs Research Centers (RCs) conduct individual and independent theme-based research and education activities on the optimal use of therapeutics and are the subject of a separate, but related FOA (RFA-HS-11-004). The CS Forum convenes the CERTs through meetings of its National Steering Committee (SC) and also through CERTs workgroups and committees that address important and common issues in therapeutics which draw upon the aggregated experience and expertise of the CERTs RCs and their partners; the CS Forum thereby supports the CERTs in addressing 5 broad programmatic interest areas: (1) comparative effectiveness, (2) patient safety, (3) tool development, enhancement, and/or validation, (4) health care system interventions, and (5) translation of research findings into practice or policy. In addition to supporting the CERTs SC and RCs, the CS Forum supports a minimum of one major collaborative CERTs project/activity annually based upon input and recommendations of the CERTs RCs and SC. Activities convened and supported by the CS Forum may result in a variety of scientific achievements, including but not limited to, agenda-setting or consensus conferences, publications, or the development of methods or tools to improve the use of therapeutics. The CS Forum is anticipated to require in addition to its PI, a Program Manager and a minimum of 1 full-time Associate Co- investigator (or the equivalent level of effort, distributed among 2 to 3 scientists) to support CERTs workgroups and committees through leadership, research, analysis, documentation, publication, and/or dissemination of workgroup or committee activities. In order to support CERTs collaborations and the dissemination and implementation of CERTs research and education findings, the CS Forum handles all the logistic, communications, and organizational infrastructure that is necessary to convene and carry out CERTs-wide activities. Examples of the kinds of support needed include (but are not limited to) the following: Steering Committee (SC) and other meeting planning and organization, public affairs activities, drafting and preparation of scientific or educational documents, maintenance of data bases, and support of shared electronic communications such as listservs and Web sites for public information as well as to inform internal CERTs communications.

UIC is restricted to one application.
