Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship Program

Program Summary

Microsoft Research seeks nominees who are advancing computing research in novel directions with the potential for high impact on the state of the art, and who demonstrate the likelihood of becoming thought leaders in the field. The program identifies, recognizes, and supports exceptional new faculty members engaged in innovative computing research. The objective of this program is to stimulate and support creative research undertaken by promising researchers who have the potential to make a profound impact on the field of computing in their research disciplines. The funds can be applied to a wide variety of uses to pursue novel research. Examples of possible research areas include, but are not limited to: interdisciplinary research, scientific computing, bioinformatics, computational biology, software engineering, and other areas where computing transforms the discipline and advances the state of the art.

Awards: Each fellowship award includes an unrestricted cash gift of US$200,000. Microsoft awards seven grants each year.

Eligibility

  • Nominees must hold a tenure-track faculty position and may be no more than six years from the completion of their most recent Ph.D., Sc.D., or M.D. Ph.D. 
  • Nominees must be new faculty members in the first, second, or third year of their first faculty appointment. 


UIC is restricted to one application. An emphasis is placed on nominations from departments working on computing research areas and on areas that involve the innovative application of computing.

Letter of Intent Instructions

  • By submitting this form, applicant attests that s/he has read and meets the sponsor's eligibility criteria for this program.  The LOI can be emailed to RDS@uic.edu, Attn: Tony Halford
  • OVCR may reserve submission slots for previously submitted but unfunded proposals that received highly competitive ratings from the external sponsor.    These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Vice Chancellor.  For consideration, scanned copies of your complete reviews (not just summary) must be included with LOI.

White paper competition
Potential applicants are encouraged to begin writing their white paper proposals as soon as possible.  White paper applications are identical to Microsoft application instructions.

Please submit the following by 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28
 
1.  Cover page with your contact information

2.  Narrative - address the following questions and adhere to the required word count limit.

  • What is the innovative merit of the nominee’s research? (Maximum word count = 250)
  • How does the nominee’s work have the potential to advance the state of the art? ((Maximum word count = 300)
  • How is the university currently supporting the nominee’s work? ((Maximum word count = 100)
  • Does the nominee’s current work receive funding from other grant sources? If yes, please list. ((Maximum word count = 50)
  • Provide a statement detailing the hypothesis, objectives, and methodology of the nominee’s research work and plans. Include a brief description of how the award funds would be used. ((Maximum word count = 650)
