NEH -Summer Stipends
20110929-FT
Program Summary
Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public’s understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly tools. These awards would be for summer 2012.
Awards
Awards are for $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing. Summer Stipends recipients may hold other research grants during the tenure of their awards, but they must work full-time on their projects during the two months of their tenure. Summer Stipends normally support work carried out during the summer months, but arrangements can be made for holding tenure at other times of the year.
Nominations/Limited Submissions
UIC is restricted to two full time faculty* member nominations. UIC faculty who wish to submit to this program must complete and submit an internal letter of intent form (LOI), details below. *Note: UIC staff members who are not faculty members and will not be teaching during the academic year preceding the award tenure may apply online without a nomination. Adjunct faculty, part-time faculty, and applicants with academic appointments that terminate by the summer of the award tenure may also apply online without a nomination.
Eligibility and Restrictions
Please review the following eligibility criteria and program restrictions prior to submitting internal LOI:
Eligibility
- U.S. citizens are eligible. Foreign nationals who have been living in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least the three years prior to the time of application are eligible.
- Individuals currently enrolled in a degree-granting program are ineligible.
- Individuals who have held a major fellowship or research grant or its equivalent within the last three academic years prior to the deadline are ineligible. A "major fellowship or research grant" is a postdoctoral research award that provides a stipend of at least $15,000. Sabbaticals and grants from an individual's own institution and stipends and grants from other sources supporting study and research during the summer are not considered major fellowships.
- Individuals who have previously received a Summer Stipend may apply to support a new stage in their project. These applications will be judged by the same criteria as other applications. Previous recipients, however, must wait five years from the time they received their award to reapply.
Restrictions
Summer Stipends awards cannot be used for:
- projects that seek to promote a particular political, religious, or ideological point of view;
- projects that advocate a particular program of social action;
- specific policy studies;
- research for doctoral dissertations or theses by students enrolled in a degree program;
- the preparation or revision of textbooks;
- curriculum development;
- the development of pedagogical tools (including teaching methods or theories);
- educational or technical impact assessments;
- the creation or enhancement of databases, unless part of a larger interpretive project;
- empirical social science research, unless part of a larger humanities project;
- inventories of collections; or
- works in the creative or performing arts (e.g., painting, writing fiction or poetry, dance performance, etc.).
NOTE: These awards are to individuals, not institutions. Grant recipients are responsible for all tax liabilities.
UIC is restricted to two full time faculty* member nominations.
