NIH – Superfund Basic Research and Training Program

Program Description

SBRP grants will support coordinated, multi-project, multi- and interdisciplinary research programs to address the mandates legislated under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. These mandates include the development of 1) methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances in the environment; (2) advanced techniques for the detection, assessment, and evaluation of the effect on human health of hazardous substances; (3) methods to assess the risks to human health presented by hazardous substances; and (4) basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the amount and toxicity of hazardous substances.

Awards

NIEHS intends to commit approximately $5.5 million to fund two to three grants in response to this announcement.

Limited Competition Instructions

Submit one electronic copy of a White Paper containing the following:

  1. One (1) Page cover page with following information:
    1. Name & departmental affiliation of PI and Co-PIs
    2. Sponsor and sponsor program name
    3. Title of White Paper
    4. PI Contact Information
    5. Unit Business Manager or Grant Coordinator contact information
    6. Optional:
      1. Identify potential individuals to review proposal - reviewers should not have a personal stake in outcome of this competition and ideally should not be from same unit as applicant.
      2. Identify reviewers to exclude - this information will remain confidential.
      3. Note if this is a resubmission. If so, attach any peer review comments received from either external sponsor or a prior UIC internal competition.
  2. Three (3) page narrative addressing:
    1. How your proposal addresses the intent of Program Announcement
    2. What PI & team expect to accomplish
    3. Expected overall significance

    Page limits INCLUDE any charts, figures, tables, references, etc

  3. Attach the following for PI and each CoPI:
    1. Two page CV
    2. 1 page current and pending support

Narrative must be 12-point font; minimum acceptable margin is 1 inch (2.5 cm) all around.
Unless otherwise noted, no budget is required.
