NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program: Recovery and Reinvestment (MRI-R2) NSF 09-561Internal Competition CompletedPrincipal Investigators Selected:
Program SummaryAs a result of the enactment of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the MRI program is announcing a call for proposals that is separate from the annual January submission deadline. The link to the "Major Research Instrumentation – Recovery and Reinvestment" (MRI-R²) solicitation can be found below. NSF's Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program provides funds to purchase or develop major research equipment that is too costly for support through other NSF programs. Proposals for instrumentation will be considered for all NSF-supported fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. The program will NOT provide support for instrumentation to be used in medical education (such as medical school courses). Instrumentation intended for research with disease-related goals, including work on the etiology, diagnosis or treatment of physical or mental disease, abnormality, or malfunction in human beings or animals, is normally not supported. Instrumentation for research on animal models of such conditions or the development or testing of drugs or other procedures for their treatment also is not eligible for support. However, instrumentation for bioengineering research, with diagnosis- or treatment-related goals that applies engineering principles to problems in biology and medicine, while also advancing engineering knowledge, is eligible for support. Instrumentation for bioinformatics and bioengineering research to aid persons with disabilities also is eligible. Proposals that wholly or substantially duplicate MRI proposals that were submitted under NSF 09-502, and were accepted for review, will not be accepted for this MRI-R2 competition. Awards range from $100,000 to $6 million. Cost Share Requirements: UIC is restricted to three applications. A maximum of two submissions can be for instrument acquisition. If three proposals are submitted, at least one submission must be for instrument development. UIC as subawardee: If UIC is on another organization's acquisition proposal OR if UIC represents more than 20% of the budget of another organization's development proposal it will count against our submission limits. In the event the number of potential UIC applications exceeds the number of allowed submissions, submission priority will be given to applications on which UIC is the lead institution.
