Program Summary
The Math and Science Partnership program is a major research and development effort that supports innovative partnerships to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. Projects are expected to both raise the achievement levels of all students and significantly reduce achievement gaps in the mathematics and science performance of diverse student populations.
This program supports the following types of awards:
- Targeted Partnerships - seek to improve student achievement within a specific grade range or disciplinary focus
- Institute Partnerships - seek to meet national needs for teachers with deep knowledge of disciplinary content and who are intellectual leaders in M&S
- MSP-Start Partnerships – geared to institutions new to MSP program, especially minority serving or primarily undergraduate institutions
- Phase II Partnerships – for prior MSP Partnership awardees, intended to focus on innovative areas of work where evidence of significant positive impact is clearly documented
- Research, Evaluation, and Technical assistance (RETA) - Directly support the work of the partnerships by conducting methodologically rigorous studies of the impacts of MSP activities on student or teacher learning.
Awards:
Vary by track. NSF expects to make 17-27 total MSP awards.
Submission limits:
- UIC may be the lead partner in only one proposal per Partnership category – Targeted, Institute, MSP-Start and Phase II.
- UIC may be non-lead on more than one proposal

OVCR may reserve submission slots for previously submitted but unfunded proposals that received highly competitive ratings from the external sponsor. These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Vice Chancellor. For consideration, scanned copies of your complete reviews (not just summary) must be included with LOI.
Depending upon the number of LOIs submitted, OVCR might be required to facilitate an internal peer review process to select UIC’s submission(s) to this program. White paper instructions will be posted if necessary.
