NSF - Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences (OEDG)
NSF 08-605
Program Summary
This program provides support to increase participation in the geosciences by African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos/Chicanos, Native Americans (American Indians and Alaskan Natives), Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesians or Micronesians), and persons with disabilities. An important but secondary goal is to strengthen understanding of geoscience and its relevance to modern society among broad and diverse segments of the population. This program has three tracks: Planning; Track 1: Proof of Concept; and Track 2: Full Scale Projects. Submission limits apply only to Track 2. Maximum Track 2 award is $2 million over five years.
UIC is restricted to one Track 2 Full Scale Project application as either the Lead Institution of a Collaborative Proposal or the sole submitting organization. UIC may participate as a non-Lead Institution for additional Collaborative Proposals submitted to Track 2.
Notes on Track 2 Full Scale Applications:
- Institutions with Track 2 projects that were previously funded by the OEDG Program are eligible to seek up to three years of additional support for their OEDG project, but only for activities that lead to long-term sustainability of the program.
- Track 2 proposals are required to include a letter of support from a high-ranking administrative official (e.g., Department Chair, Dean, Vice President) describing how the proposed project aligns with institutional diversity plans and goals and indicate the level of commitment toward sustaining activities that are shown through evaluation to be effective.
- Track 2 proposals from institutions that participate in LSAMP or AGEP alliances are not required to partner with these alliances, but if they will not be partners, the proposal must discuss how the proposed OEDG project will align with, or complement, the activities offered through these alliances.

Letter of Intent Instructions
- By submitting this form, applicant attests that s/he has read and meets the sponsor's eligibility criteria for this program. The LOI can be emailed to RDS@uic.edu, Attn: Chang Lee.
- OVCR may reserve submission slots for previously submitted but unfunded proposals that received highly competitive ratings from the external sponsor. These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Vice Chancellor. For consideration, scanned copies of your complete reviews (not just summary) must be included with LOI.
LOI form: http://tigger.uic.edu/depts/ovcr/research/funding/forms/0600.doc
Depending upon the number of LOIs submitted, OVCR might be required to facilitate an internal peer review process to select UIC’s submission(s) to this program. White paper instructions will be issued to those submitting LOIs, if necessary.
