Limited (Internal) Competition
NSF –Partnerships for Innovation (PFI)

Program Description:

The goals of the PFI are to 1) stimulate the transformation of knowledge created by the research and education enterprise into innovations that create new wealth, build strong local, regional and national economies and improve the national well-being; 2) broaden participation of all types of academic institutions and all citizens in NSF activities to meet the broad workforce needs of the national innovation enterprise; and 3) catalyze or enhance enabling infrastructure necessary to foster and sustain innovation in the long term.

UIC is limited to participating in two proposals. UIC can only be the lead institution on one proposal. A senior institutional administrator (dean or higher) in the lead institution must serve as PI or Co-PI.

Awards:

Up to $600,000 for two or three years.

In section VII, please indicate whether UIC will be the lead institution; if not, please indicate name of the lead institution. Completed Notice of Intent should be sent to Mr. Tony Halford, Program Coordinator at ahalford@uic.edu.

Internal Competition Guidelines

  1. Interested parties should submit one electronic white paper (single PDF document) by 3:00 p.m. on Monday May 15 to ahalford@uic.edu containing the following:
    No more than three (3) pages addressing:
    • How your proposal addresses the intent of Program Announcement
    • What the PI and team expect to accomplish and its overall significance
  2. In addition, please attach:
    • Vitae (2 page) with current and pending support (1 page) for PI and each Co-PI
  3. Letter from private sector partner which briefly (1 paragraph to one page) outlines their proposed role in project.

Note 1: Dean or Department head MUST serve as PI.
Note 2: No budget information is requested for this white paper submission.
Note 3: Narrative must be 12 point font; minimum acceptable margin is 1 inch (2.5 cm) all around.

Limited Competition Instructions

Instructions will be posted if OVCR determines a limited competition is necessary.

Collaboration Forum

OVCR would be pleased to facilitate a forum for faculty who wish to explore potential collaborations.

Reviewers - (Optional) :

  • Identify potential individuals to review proposal - reviewers should not have a personal stake in outcome of this competition and ideally should not be from same unit as applicant
  • Identify reviewers to exclude - this information will remain confidential.
