NSF – Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) – NSF- 09-567

Internal Competition Completed

Principal Investigators Selected:

  • Robert Paul Malchow, Biological Sciences (LAS)
  • Lewis Wedgewood, Chemical Engineering (ENG)

Program Description

This program makes grants to institutions of higher education to support scholarships for academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the workforce following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate level degree in fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.   The S-STEM program emphasizes the importance of recruiting students to science and engineering disciplines, mentoring and supporting students through degree completion, and partnering with employers to facilitate student career placement in the STEM workforce.  Grantee institution is responsible for selecting scholarship recipients – the program does not make scholarship awards directly to the students.

Awards
Annual budgets are limited to $225,000 per year for up to five years.  Awards are not expected to exceed $600,000 in total.

Limits
UIC may submit one application from each college that awards degrees in an eligible field.
PI must be a faculty member currently teaching in one of the S-STEM disciplines who can provide the leadership required to ensure the success of the project.
