Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) in Engineering

Program Summary

This solicitation aims at introducing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches into undergraduate engineering education. The focus of this year’s competition is on nanoscale engineering education with relevance to devices and systems and/or on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology.

UIC may submit one proposal. A second proposal may be submitted only if it is focused on the societal, ethical, economic, and or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. Proposals must be submitted by a Principal Investigator holding a faculty appointment in a college or department of Engineering.

Letter of Intent

By submitting this form, applicant attests that s/he has read and meets the sponsor's eligibility criteria for this program. Special instructions: OVCR may reserve submission slots for previously submitted but unfunded proposals that received highly competitive ratings from the external sponsor. These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Vice Chancellor. For consideration, scanned copies of your complete reviews (not just summary) must be included with LOI.

Limited Competition Instructions

Submit one electronic copy of a white paper containing the following:

  1. One (1) page cover sheet with following information:
    1. Name & departmental affiliation of PI, Co-PIs, senior personnel
    2. Sponsor and sponsor program name 
    3. Title of White Paper proposal – should start with IGERT:
    4. Lead PI Contact Information
    5. Unit Business Manager or Grant Coordinator contact information
  2. Three (3)-page summary narrative addressing the intent of the program announcement, specifically:
    1. Vision, goals, thematic basis of project including its anticipated impact
    2. Major research efforts
    3. Education and training
    4. Resources and commitments
    Note: Three-page limit is inclusive of tables, figures, or other graphical data.  You may add up to one additional fourth page to be used exclusively for references.
  3. Attach the following for PI, CoPIs, and key personnel:
    1. Two page CV – In choosing what to include, emphasize information that will be helpful for understanding the strengths, qualifications, and specific impact the individual brings to the IGERT project.
    2. 1 page current and pending support
  4. Optional (to be included in transmittal email):   
    1. Identify potential individuals to review proposal - reviewers should not have a personal stake in outcome of this competition.
    2. Identify reviewers to exclude - this information will remain confidential. 
    3. Note if this is a resubmission.  If so, attach any peer review comments received from either from prior internal competition or from external sponsor.

Narrative must be 12-point font; minimum acceptable margin is ½ inch all around.   No budget is required.

Do not submit multiple attachments. This should be submitted as one complete file. Submit by the deadline listed above to Tony Halford at ahalford@uic.edu.
