Program Summary

UIC has been invited to submit one nomination to the Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences.  The program supports assistant professors of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. Strong proposals will demonstrate particularly creative and innovative approaches. Risk-taking is encouraged. The major elements upon which selection of the successful candidates will be based are a detailed description of the work the applicant proposes to undertake, evaluations of earlier performance from previous mentors, and notable past accomplishments, including honors, awards and publications. In evaluating the candidates, the National Advisory Committee gives considerable weight to evidence that the candidate is an independent investigator and to significant published work. The award provides $240,000 in flexible support - $60,000 per year for a four-year period.  In 2012, the Trusts will name 22 Pew Scholars.

Eligibility

  • Open to individuals with a doctorate in medicine or biomedical sciences.
  • As of November 1, 2011, candidates must hold full-time appointments at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent.
  • On July 1, 2012, they must not have been in such an appointment for more than three years, whether or not such appointments were on a tenure track. This time may have been spent at more than one institution.
  • Individuals with committed support from similar private foundation awards in excess of $50,000 a year for the first two years of the Pew Scholarship, until June 30, 2014, are ineligible.  Individuals chosen to be Pew Scholars may not simultaneously be supported by similar private foundation awards in excess of $50,000 a year during the first two years of the Pew support.  These awards include but are not limited to those of the Searle, Damon Runyon, Rita Allen, Ellison, and Kimmel foundations. Institutions are strongly encouraged to nominate a candidate who is not applying for and is not already funded by such awards. Funding from the NIH, other government sources, and project grants from public charities and nonprofit associations such as the American Cancer Society do not pose a conflict with the Pew Scholars Program.

UIC is restricted to one nomination.

Depending upon the number of LOIs submitted, OVCR might be required to facilitate an internal peer review process to select UIC’s submission(s) to this program.  White paper instructions will be posted if necessary.
