Internal Competition Completed
Principal Investigators Selected:
- Ying Liu, Chemical Engineering Department, College of Engineering
- Jessica Pedersen, Occupational Therapy Department, College of Applied Health Sciences
- Bharati Prasad, Pulmonary, Critical Care, Sleep and Allergy Department, College of Medicine (Chicago)
Program Summary
The Parker B. Francis Fellowship in Pulmonary Research is intended to support the development of outstanding investigators who plan careers in pulmonary research. The purpose is to help them as they make the transition to independent, self-supporting, faculty members. Grants are made for three years of support. Fellows supported by a Parker B. Francis Fellowship must be assured of having at least 75 percent of their time available for research. This means that a total of no more than three months per year may be spent in clinical or other non-research activities.
Appropriate topics include
a broad array of approaches to pulmonary and critical care medicine, ranging from cell and molecular studies, to those involving epidemiologic and clinical aspects of human subjects. Also encouraged are applications from pulmonary medicine specialists interested in pursuing research in bioethical aspects of pulmonary medicine or critical care. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the ethics of clinical trials in critical care, end-of-life decisions and resource allocation. The context of all these topics should be pulmonary biology and lung disease.
The total budget is limited to $50,000 for the first year, $52,000 for the second and $54,000 for the third. These totals include a stipend plus fringe benefits and may include travel to a maximum of $2,000 per year.
Eligibility Criteria include:
- Two to five years of research experience at time of fellowship application
- Participated as an author on a minimum of two or three research publications
- Candidates from under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply
- Must not have an NIH K series or similar award at the time of application
- Must not be a principal investigator on an NIH R01 or similar research grant when applying for this Fellowship
- Applications will not be considered if either the mentor or the Fellow has a relationship with the tobacco industry as described in the American Thoracic Society (ATS) guidelines (see sponsor website for more details)
- If a current Fellow or his/her mentor enters into a relationship with the tobacco industry, the Fellowship support will be immediately terminated
UIC is allowed to submit only one application per department per year.
For departments who currently have a Parker B. Francis Fellow in their department: The sponsor will award a maximum of two fellows per department at a given time. If a department currently has two Parker B. Francis Fellows, they cannot submit an application. If a department currently has one Parker B. Francis Fellow, they may submit one application for an additional award this funding cycle.
