Pfizer Visiting Professorships in Infectious Diseases

Program Summary

The Pfizer Visiting Professorships in Infectious Diseases program facilitates in-depth, educationally focused visits by prominent medical experts to US medical schools and/or teaching hospitals. These unrestricted educational grants are nationally competitive, and an independent academic advisory board of recognized leaders in infectious diseases chooses grant recipients.

Up to 8 grants of $7500 each will be awarded to selected organizations (“host institutions”) to cover the visiting professors’ honoraria, travel expenses, and other direct expenses related to the visit. A visit may occur between July 2009 and June 2010. The purpose of the visit is to bring new educational value to the institution; therefore, it cannot be part of or adjunct to a previously planned or regularly scheduled program/event. The advisory board will aim to award topics in the following areas: management and treatment of fungal infections; management and treatment of MRSA; and management and treatment of treatment-experienced HIV/AIDS patients.

Eligibility:
Accredited US medical schools (allopathic or osteopathic) and/or affiliated teaching hospitals with departments/divisions of infectious diseases, or any other departments/divisions, adult or pediatric, engaged in the study of infectious diseases are eligible to apply. The department/division head should serve as the “host” of the visiting professor and the visit.

Institutions with new, emerging, and community-based research and/or clinical programs, as well as academic/community partnerships, are encouraged to apply. Organizations that do not typically have the opportunity to bring in prominent experts should consider this program. The applicant may choose a visiting professor who is a regionally, nationally, or internationally known expert.

UIC may submit one application per department/division engaged in the study of infectious diseases.
