The Schweppe Foundation Career Development Award

Program Summary

The principal objective of the program is to foster and support the development of outstanding individuals in the early stages of their careers in the area of academic medicine.  Institutions should select only individuals who wish to make academic medicine, research and teaching their careers and who have demonstrated enthusiasm and talent for teaching and who have been involved in research endeavors during their prior years of medical and scientific training, either in medical school, during a subspecialty fellowship, or as a post-doctoral fellow. In the application, the institution is expected to demonstrate strong institutional support, such as financial support in the form of salary and technical support, and a plan for the individual’s career development.

Awards are for $50,000 per year for two years. The award is intended to allow the individual sufficient “protected time from administrative, teaching and substantial clinical duties so that such individual will have the time necessary to carry out fully his/her research project and to develop fully as an independent investigator.   No part of any award can be used to defray any portion of the salary of the individual or to defray any administrative or indirect costs of the grantee institution.

UIC is limited to three applications.  Interested faculty must submit an internal letter of intent. A peer reviewed white paper process will be held if OVCR receives more than three LOIs by the posted deadline.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Applicants must hold a M.D., D.O., D.V.M., or PhD. Degree.
  • Applicant must be junior faculty within the College of Medicine or its affiliated units
  • The foundation will not act favorably with respect to applications involving an established independent investigator. Awards should generally not be requested for individuals above the rank of Assistant Professor; in most cases, it is expected that the individual will have held a junior faculty position for less than four years following the completion of formal training.
  • Awards will not be made if the particular individual has received an NIH-RO1 award or equivalent level funding prior to the submission of the application.
