Dana Foundation – Brain
and Immuno-imaging
NOTE: The revised Dana Foundation request for proposals is not due to be announced until the end of September. In order to give UIC applicants more time to develop proposals prior to the sponsor’s anticipated mid-November deadline, we are starting the internal selection process early, utilizing the guidelines from the last competition. Any changes between the old and new guidelines will be addressed administratively.
Program Description:
The Dana Foundation’s imaging research program focuses on improving human brain and brain-immune functioning in health and disease. The program consists of two tracks. Track A is for conventional imaging (anatomical imaging of white or gray matter and measures of physiological functioning). Track B is for cellular and molecular imaging of biochemical actions of specific brain cells, or their interactions with immune cells. Institutions may submit only one application per track. Both tracks support pilot-testing of promising but high-risk innovative ideas that have direct clinical application and that, when successful, are competitive for larger scale support from other funders. The program focuses on providing support to faculty researchers early in their career, at the assistant professor level, or early in their associate professor career. Proposals from senior investigators generally will be considered only if they represent a new direction of research. Post-doctoral research fellows are not eligible to apply.
UIC is restricted to one application per track.
Awards
Track A: Applicants who have not yet been awarded their first independent research grant (R01 from the NIH or equivalent from another Federal agency) or have received only one such grant at the time of applying, are eligible to apply for funding of up to $200,000 payable over three years. Other applicants proposing to undertake research using conventional brain imaging technologies can receive funding totaling up to $100,000 payable over three years.
Track B: Applicants for all cellular and molecular imaging studies can request up to $200,000 total, payable over three years.

Letter of Intent Instructions
- By submitting this form, applicant attests that s/he has read and meets the sponsor's eligibility criteria for this program. The LOI can be emailed to RDS@uic.edu, Attn: Chang Lee
- OVCR may reserve submission slots for previously submitted but unfunded proposals that received highly competitive ratings from the external sponsor. These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Vice Chancellor. For consideration, scanned copies of your complete reviews (not just summary) must be included with LOI.
- Depending upon the number of LOIs submitted, OVCR may be required to facilitate an internal peer review process to select UIC’s submission(s) to this program. Based on the response to this program in previous years, we anticipate that an internal peer review process (Internal Limited Competition) will be required.

Internal Competition Instructions
Submit one electronic (.pdf) copy containing the following information to rds@uic.edu by September 29, 2008:
- One (1) Page cover page with following information:
- Project title; investigator(s') name(s), title(s), phone and fax numbers, E-mail, and street addresses.
- Item 9: Please indicate one of the following categories: Track A or Track B.
- Three (3) page narrative addressing:
- A clearly and succinctly stated hypothesis.
- The aims of the proposed research project. What disease(s) or disorder(s) would be better understood, diagnosed, or treated? Or, what normal brain or immune function would be better understood? Or, what imaging technology would be refined? If this proposal is for technology development or modification, please provide initial evidence of the project's feasibility.
- The research significance and potential clinical application(s) of the research.
- The methods. What specific tests or studies are proposed to develop the pilot data? If human participants are planned, please provide preliminary evidence that the number required can be recruited from the participating institution(s).
- The qualifications of the primary investigator(s) for undertaking the proposed research. What facilities and resources at the applicant institution(s) would be used in the research? Please provide evidence that required technologies would be available for this project.
- Attach the following for PI and each CoPI:
- Two page CV
- One page summary of current and pending support
Narrative must be 12-point font; minimum acceptable margin is ½” inch all around. No budget is required
