New Funding Supports Multidisciplinary Research for Faculty and Grad Students
In order to promote scholarly interdisciplinary research at UIC, I am pleased to announce two new multidisciplinary initiatives for the upcoming academic year for faculty and graduate students: the Chancellor's Discovery Fund for Multidisciplinary Pilot Research Projects and the Chancellor's Supplemental Graduate Fellowship Program.
The Chancellor's Discovery Fund for Multidisciplinary Pilot Research Projects is a pilot grant program intended to support up to five new collaborations led by emerging researchers at UIC. The purpose of this program will be to foster academic inquiry drawing on the expertise of different disciplines, to nurture the research career trajectories of promising early stage investigators, and to help awardees leverage extramural funding. The Discovery Fund will award up to $30,000 over a two-year period with the possibility of up to $10,000 in additional funding (if there is a funding match of 1:1 by department or college sources).
Approximately five grants will be awarded, and projects will begin January 2010. Letters of Intent must be submitted by September 1, 2009. For more information about this program, eligibility, deadlines and criteria, visit www.research.uic.edu/funding/discovery.
The Chancellor's Supplemental Graduate Fellowship Program will support increased multidisciplinary scholarship opportunities and exposure to careers in research and creative fields for graduate and professional students. Successful applicants must show exceptional promise for future multidisciplinary research and creative activity in their field of interest. Funding will allow graduate or professional candidates to supplement existing stipends with a 0% fellowship appointment. A faculty mentor will direct the project, but it is expected that the student will play the major role in the writing of this application. The award amount will be up to $4,000 per year for 2 years and a total of 20 fellowships will be awarded. Letters of Intent must be submitted by September 21, 2009. For more information about this program, eligibility, deadlines and criteria, visit http://grad.uic.edu/cms/?pid=1000778.
Multidisciplinary research approaches are problem-focused; many issues transcend the traditional discipline boundaries. I expect these two initiatives to stimulate dialogue and collaboration among faculty and graduate students, and to develop new and innovative research partnerships.
Sincerely,
Paula Allen-Meares
Chancellor
