Program Summary
NSF's Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program provides funding to develop interdisciplinary research-based, graduate education and training activities in emerging areas of science and engineering. The program also includes a competition for one new resource center for the purpose of sharing and collaboration both inside and outside the IGERT community as well as for dissemination of practices and results.
Awards
New awards will be funded for up to $400,000 in the first year and in amounts of up to $600,000 for each of the next four years. Renewals will be funded for up to $600,000 per year.
Submission Limits
UIC can only submit 4 (four) pre-proposals for either new or renewal IGERT proposals. Full proposals by invitation only.

Note - This information will be updated when the new IGERT announcement is released from NSF. Any changes will be addressed administratively by OVCR’s Research Development Services. NSF will not be soliciting new IGERT Resource Center proposals in 2009.

Letter of Intent
- By submitting this form, applicant attests that s/he:
- has read and meets the sponsor's eligibility criteria for this program.
- If selected, may be required to modify certain portions of their proposal in order to conform to any program changes identified in the revised NSF IGERT program guidelines, once released.
- OVCR may reserve submission slots for previously submitted but unfunded proposals that received highly competitive ratings from the external sponsor. These will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Vice Chancellor. For consideration, scanned copies of complete reviews (not just summary) must be included with LOI.
- OVCR will reserve submission slots for renewal proposals to any sponsor.

Depending upon the number of LOIs submitted, OVCR might be required to facilitate an internal peer review process to select UIC’s submission(s) to this program. Those submitting LOIs will be contacted regarding the need to submit a white paper.
Limited Competition Instructions
Submit one electronic copy of a white paper containing the following:
- One (1)
page cover sheet with following information:
- Name & departmental affiliation
of PI, Co-PIs, senior personnel
- Sponsor and sponsor program name
- Title of White Paper proposal – should
start with IGERT:
- Lead PI Contact Information
- Unit Business Manager or Grant Coordinator

- Three
(3)-page summary narrative addressing the intent of the program announcement,
specifically:
- Vision, goals, thematic basis of project - include anticipated
impact.
- Major research efforts
- Education and training
- Resources and commitments
- If this is a resubmission, you may add up to 1 (one) additional page to indicate how you have responded to reviewer’s comments. This page should precede the project description. Attach any peer review comments received from either prior internal competition or from NSF to the end of your proposal.
- Three-page limit is inclusive of tables, figures, or other graphical data.
- An additional fourth page may be added exclusively for references.
- Narrative must be 12-point font; minimum acceptable margin is ½” all around.
- Attach the following for PI, CoPIs, and key personnel:
- Two page CV – In
choosing what to include, emphasize information that will be helpful
for understanding the strengths, qualifications,
and specific
impact the individual brings to the IGERT project.
- 1 page current
