St. Baldrick’s Foundation - Spring/Fall Grant Cycle
Internal Competition Completed
Principal Investigators Selected:
- Marlene Bouvier, Ph.D., Associate professor, COM
Program Summary
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a nonprofit organization raising funds for childhood cancer
research. The foundation raises funds primarily through events at which volunteers are shaved bald in solidarity with children who often lose their hair during cancer treatment. “Shavees” collect pledges from donors to see them shorn.
While the first event was held on St. Patrick’s Day in 2000, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has existed since late 2004. In these five years the foundation has granted over $42.3 million for childhood cancer research – over $12 million in 2009 alone.
Spring grant cycle
NOTE: The Foundation has extended their letter of intent deadline for UIC applicants. Please contact RDS@uic.edu for additional information.
UIC is restricted to one application per program.
- St. Baldrick’s Fellows: Letter of intent required; applications due by 3/31/2010. The Foundation funds years 2-3 of a pediatric oncology research fellowship, with an opportunity for one additional year of funding. (Fellow’s salary & benefits only.) One of the foundation’s goals is to have funded one fellowship at each institution that has a pediatric oncology fellowship program by the year 2011. The foundation encourages applications from institutions with fellowship programs which have not previously received St. Baldrick’s funding.
- St. Baldrick’s Summer Fellows: A pilot project will be launched in 2010 (institutions chosen by invitation), offering a small stipend for students between their first and second year of medical school to work in a pediatric oncology lab. Institutions with appropriate programs in place should contact Becky@StBaldricks.org to express interest.
- St. Baldrick’s Scholars: Letter of intent required; applications by 3/31/2010. This career development award is to help develop the independent research of highly qualified individuals still early in their careers. ($110,000/year, 3 year minimum, with an opportunity for two additional years. Funding is for Scholar’s salary & benefits only.)
- Research grants: Letter of intent required; applications by 3/31/2010. These one-year grants are for specific research projects which are hypothesis driven and may be either laboratory or clinical in nature. (Please submit a realistic budget for the project; average grant will be $100,000 or less.)
- New for 2010 – Supportive Care Research grants: Letter of intent required; applications by 3/31/2010. These grants are for specific research projects which are hypothesis driven and focus on areas related to the supportive care of children and adolescents with cancer. Examples include but are not limited to: studies related to symptom clusters, patient-reported outcomes/quality of life, health communication, health promotion, and psychosocial support across the trajectory from diagnosis to survivorship or end-of-life care. (Please submit a realistic budget for the project; average grant will be $50,000).
While the above applications are funded based on scientific review, St. Baldrick’s participation may be used as a tie-breaker in funding decisions. Participation is not limited to having one’s head shaved; it may include speaking at an event or to the media on behalf of St. Baldrick’s, helping identify volunteers or families of kids with cancer to honor, hosting a group of volunteers to learn more about the cause, and more.
Fall grant cycle
UIC is restricted to one application.
Infrastructure grants: No letter of intent; applications due by 8/20/2010. These grants support institutions with the potential for more participation in childhood cancer clinical trials, but which currently lack necessary resources (primarily support for Clinical Research Associates). Preference is given to institutions with high needs and low philanthropic support, in areas where St. Baldrick’s funds are raised. (Normally $25,000 - $50,000)
